Websites come in many shapes, sizes, colours and designs. Whilst some are absolutely exceptional, others can leave you screaming in frustration. Whilst there are some common website mistakes that leave us a little annoyed – like extra loud, auto-play videos – the following mistakes are what can be most problematic for business. As the internet becomes increasingly competitive, it has become even more crucial to keep your website the best it can be.
1. Cheap web hosting
The old adage “you get what you pay for” applies to everything from business cards to web hosting! Do you print your business cards on office paper, or did you get them printed by Vista or Snap Printing? There is a huge difference between the 80gsm paper you can buy at Officeworks versus the 350gsm glossy paper you get from a printer. If your business has a great reputation off-line, why would you risk it online with a sub-par web host?
2. Long or confusing domain names
Just the other day I drove past a truck that had the longest website address shown that I think I have ever seen! It was something along the lines of www.southernstarmelbournetransportservices.com.au. The likelihood of someone mistyping that web address – high. The chances of someone remembering that web address – low.
Having a memorable and easy to spell domain will both attract and retain visitors. You can easily check out domain name availability here.
3. Building your business website on a platform you don’t own
Bottom line is this – you are always at risk of losing your web presence that you are working so hard to build. That’s one of the reasons why we love wordpress.
4. Impersonal business email addresses
Professional email addresses are as simple as firstname.lastname@example.org – they say who you are and where you are from before the recipient has even opened their email. Using an outlook, gmail, yahoo or hotmail email when you have a beautifully designed website is just sad.
5. Falling behind with website software updates
Keeping your website content and design fresh is one thing, but it is equally important to stay on top of your website software updates. Out of date software make your site vulnerable to hackers and is so easily avoidable by staying on top of your updates.
