How Does Image Size Affect My WordPress Website?

Images and WordPress WebsitesHow does images size and type affect my website?

“The importance of optimising your images should not be underestimated. Optimizing your images will reduce your website’s page loading times, reduce bandwidth and improve the browsing experience for visitors. Your search engine ranking should also improve due to your pages loading quicker.” – Kevin Muldoon

Images are great, they can make a big difference to the visual appeal of you WordPress website and your brand. BUT they can also slow down your website, causing issues for users by increasing the amount of time it takes a page to load.  Below are some really simple tips for using images on your WordPress Website, but we highly recommend you check out the excellent infographic below for a more complete rundown.

Simple Tips for Using Images on Your WordPress Website:

  • Reduce the size of your image before you upload.  Make sure you have the resolution set at 72dpi (this setting is usually found in the Tools > Adjust Size area of an image editing program)
  • When inserting the images into a post or page choose one of the given size options (thumbnail, medium, large, etc.) this means that WordPress will serve up the exact size rather than loading a larger than needed image.

Which File Format Should I Use?

File formats can also make a difference.  PNG and JPG are two different options that people often choose to use for websites.  Here is a general guide for which format to use (taken from this great article):

  • Use JPGs (or JPEG) for high quality photos and when you don’t need to make a lot of modifications to an image before uploading it (limit saves).
  • Use PNGs for photos with text, illustrations, signs, logos, and icons, and any image you want to have transparency.

Are There WordPress Plugins That Can Help?

Yes.  There are also some great plugins that can help make the job simpler.  Especially if you are taking photos with your smartphone and publishing them straight to your WordPress website.  These plugins can automatically optimise uploaded images and also run through your entire library to optimise the images already on your site (please note: it is essential you complete a backup before you do this).
